Well 2007 is gone and 2008 is here with a vengeance. To be honest I’m a bit bummed that 07 is gone. It might have been the best video game year ever. I’m saying that it was. I’ll admit that most of the year was somewhat weak and it didn’t pick up until later in the year. But it was so good in November that I can over look the slow summer. With that said here’s what I loved and didn’t love about 07.
Wouldn’t life without DRM be grand? The folks at Warner Music and Amazon.com are going to start offering DRM free tracks. It took a while but finally Warner was convinced to start offering their music DRM free on Amazon. Looks like iTunes might have a bit of competition.
While there is still no word on Sony BMG going DRM free with anybody, this is a pretty big force that they will have to reckon with. If Sony gets on board with the DRM free craze it could be curtains for the CD. I personally am a fan of Cd’s. I like have the jewel cases and the booklets. That said I haven’t listened to a CD in years. It gets ripped onto my PC and then put on my iPod right away for the first listen. Granted the end of Cd’s is far off, this might be a sign of the times.
First thing’s first. If you’ve already hacked your iPhone/iPod Touch, this might be for you. If you’re planning on hacking said product, this might be for you. If you still care about old Playstation games, and aren’t concerned of the questionable legality of the whole thing, it might be for you. That said, this thing is pretty freaking sweet!
The emulation software is currently only in beta and has to be installed manually, meaning no AppTap quick easy install. That may come with time, more like the NES emulator. If you want to download it you can get it from ZodTTD. They say you should be able to play most games. Of course, you will have to find the games on your own. Crap, I mean make the roms from games you already own. Right?

I remember analysts originally saying how the PS3 would dominate the next-gen console wars. Well, it’s been over a year now, and, not so much. Analysts and industry “experts” still claim a comeback. Some say as early as 2008 the PS3 could bring Sony back into the next-gen war.
Media analyst firm Screen Digest is feeling confident in the media capabilities of the PS3. They think it’s going to make a strong increase in 2008. Senior games analyst, Piers Harding-Rolls, says “Now that these multi-media services - online video, IPTV, digital terrestrial TV and PVR functionality - are now available or poised to come on line in different markets, this ‘hub’ strategy is emerging as a key console battleground for Microsoft and Sony.” [Computer And Video Games]
Other sources have said it may take as long as 2011 before the Playstation 3 catches up with the runaway success of Nintendo’s Wii. Me, well, I think it’s gonna remain in third place as long as the price remains higher than competitors and the console’s library consists of more than a few decent Blu-Ray movies and one or two good games each year.
What are your thoughts? We love to hear what everybody thinks. Comment below and let us know.

That’s right, Nintendo is losing billions of dollars a month on all the Wii’s they’re not making and selling. On another note, Sony is still losing billions on all the PS3’s they are making and not selling. So, is it a conspiracy or not? Are the guys over at the big N holding back on purpose? According to Reggie Fils-Aime, the company is not holding back. Why would they? I have to admit, I was a skeptic. I thought they might’ve been holding back. They have been in the video game hardware/software business for over 25 years now and you’d think they, more than any of their competitors, would be able to keep up with demand. Guess not.

On another note, Nintendo will be teaming up with GameStop to help people deal with the Wii shortage. They’ll be offering customers rain checks. According to Yahoo!, the rain checks will be available at the regular Wii system price, $249.99, on Dec. 20 and 21, and will entitle buyers to get the Nintendo console before Jan. 29. Fils-Aime said “many tens of thousands of rain checks” would be available.

Good news PS3 owners, the patch that will allow you to use Guitar Hero 3 guitars for Rock Band is ready to go. Harmonix finished the patch and gave it to Sony for release. So why haven’t you gotten it yet? Harmonix reps posted this on their forum.
“Two weeks ago, Harmonix created a software patch for the Sony PLAYSTATION 3 version of Rock Band that allowed for guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision’s Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band. The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the compatibility patch’s release. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision’s continued objection.”
Well done Activision. I would be angry about this but it is just for PS3 owners. I think all the different guitar controllers should work if, and to me this is big, your not gonna make guitars available to purchase separate from the game. But once again PS3 owners get screwed.
Looks like those screenshots everybody, including us here at CounterAgent, posted last week have sparked some minor controversy. The developer’s have admitted to “polishing” some of the screenshots. Just a little color correction, nothing major. Guerilla, the developer behind Killzone 2, posted on the official PS3 forums
“They are only the tiniest bit touched up. Short answer is yes. Long answer is that there was a little bit of colour-correction done and some minor polish, but nothing major. Still very close to reality and it looks better in motion in my opinion.”
As if Sony and Killzone 2 need any more bad press. Then again, people say “any press is good press”. And I am writing about them right now. So, good job Sony!

Too bad it’s Solid Snake and not Solid Gold. Zing! Okay, I’m sorry, that was awful. Let’s just put that behind us and get to the real story.
Rueters reports: Ryan Payton, productions producer behind upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4 title says it needs to sell over a million copies on the first day it goes on sale due to its costly production, but that may be a tough mark to hit given sluggish PS3 sales.
