Well 2007 is gone and 2008 is here with a vengeance. To be honest I’m a bit bummed that 07 is gone. It might have been the best video game year ever. I’m saying that it was. I’ll admit that most of the year was somewhat weak and it didn’t pick up until later in the year. But it was so good in November that I can over look the slow summer. With that said here’s what I loved and didn’t love about 07.

According to an article from Reuters, Activision had the top-selling video game in November with Call of Duty 4 which “killed the competition” by selling more than 2.01 million copies for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

And while we’re talking numbers, Nintendo’s Wii had the best month of it’s life to date with some 981,000 units sold.

I’m not gonna lie. I have in the past picked up an issue of Maxim. I’ve been walking through an airport news stand and decided to pick it up. As hard as it may be for some to believe, I didn’t just buy it for the purdy girls. Some of the articles are interesting.

With that said, I have never thought of Maxim as a solid place to find video game knowledge. Maxim released their list of the top 10 games of 2007. I think that the list kinda speaks for itself. It goes as follows:

1) Call of Duty 4

2) Guitar Hero 3

3) The Orange Box

4) BioShock

5) God of War 2

6) Super Mario Galaxy

7) The Darkness

8) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

9) Stranglehold

10) Lost Planet : Extreme Condition

User’s Pick : Halo 3

Nice list huh?

While I can’t disagree with COD4 being number 1 (it’s my choice for GOTY also), how can Halo 3 not be on the list? I know I’ve ripped on the single player but good lord the multi-player alone makes it a choice. Granted I never bothered to play The Darkness, but I can’t imagine it being worthy of top 10 status. Also Stranglehold while it was a solid game doesnt deserve top 10 either.

I will give them credit for having Lost Planet on the list that was a great game and deserves a little love. Well their video game lists might not be great but hey THEY STILL GOT PRETTY LADIES!!!

Maxim’s video game list

Well, here it is, TIME’s top ten video games of 2007 list. Now you don’t have to go out and buy the magazine.

1. Halo 3
2. The Orange Box
3. Rock Band
4. Super Mario Galaxy
5. BioShock
6. Call of Duty 4
7. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
8. Mass Effect
9. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
10. God of War 2

Notice a trend of what system most of the games are on? What do you think of the list? Leave a comment and let us know. I think it should be (1) The Orange Box, (2) Super Mario Galaxy, (3) Halo 3. And I would’ve never even thought to put Ace Combat on that list. Anyway, read the full story at time.com here.

Call of Duty 4 is an amazing game. I can’t get enough of it. The best levels in the game are 2 sniping levels that take place in Chernobyl. In 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had a horrible accident and the resulting fire released a cloud of toxic radiation 100 times more potent than the first atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. The cloud moved over the town of Pripyat Ukraine.

As you sneak through the level your breath is taking away at how real it feels. The spooky feel of burnt out apartments and the abandoned swimming pool makes it the best level in the game, but how true to form is the COD4 level?

This article from The Above Domain is really great. The pictures are exactly the same as the game. Seeing these pictures and reading even more about the Chernobyl Power Plant accident really makes the level even better.

Thanks for the great article The Above Domain.

walmart_xbox360_bundle_cyber_monday1.jpg

Update: This bundle is now OUT OF STOCK, well you can still get the regular Xbox 360 Premium Bundle for $349.

Walmart.com has a sweet little “Cyber Monday” special. What you get is a Xbox 360 Premium Pro Bundle with not only the 2 games you normally get (Forza 2 and Marve: Ultimate Alliance), but you also get one game of your choice, any game your heart desires (as long as it’s on their list, which happens to have most of the top 360 titles), may I recommend The Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, or the game pictured, Halo 3, oh wait, that’s right, it’s not on the list. What? Are you serious Walmart? Why would it be in the picture if it’s not on the list? Anyway, in addition to that you get 2 wireless controllers and a “Messenger” Bag for carrying your 360 to a friends house for a weekend of pizza and energy drinks at a lan party. All that for the rock bottom price of $399.99. That’s just $50 more than the regular bundle for an extra game or your choice, wireless controller, and messenger bag. That’s roughly $140 worth of extra stuff and you’re just paying $50 extra.

Boom!

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

If your like me you’ve been waiting for this game since it showed up at e3 this year and won most of the big awards. This game didn’t disappoint. I’ve had a hard time just starting this review because I didn’t know where to start.

COD2 was a great release title for the 360 from the guys at Infinity Ward. It of course was another in the long line of WW2 shooters and quite possibly the best. Unfortunately Activision went elsewhere for COD3 and it suffered. The reason Infinity Ward didn’t do COD3 you may ask? Because they were working on COD4.

Cod4

It hasn’t been out for to long but it’s already moving up the XBLA rankings. Call of Duty 4 (my pick for game of the year) has overtaking Gears of War for the number 2 spot. Its still behind the behemoth that is Halo 3 of course, but maybe it will start giving it a run for its money. I wonder what the gap is?

Cod4 is an awesome game and we will be posting a review soon.

The fellas at Infinity Ward aren’t just sitting back though they are releasing a patch in the near future. It will mainly address the matchmaking and host problems. Games will not stop when the host leaves anymore and the server will supposedly run better in larger games now. Here’s a full list of changes. Thanks joystiq.

Additions / Features:

  • Added Kill cam to Airstrike bombs and Claymores.
  • Addition of Host Migration so if Host Leaves auto-chooses next best host.
  • Tweaked the following Oldschool Mode settings based on feedback:
    - Added Unlimited Sprint
    - Increased Magazine Size
    - Added Ragdoll Cam
  • Addition of New “N0M4D” Control Scheme.

Optimizations / Tweaks:

  • Identify party by background color (in Lobby).
  • Optimized server selection for first match for better connections.
  • Improved network performance for 18 player games.
  • Optimized ‘Chase Cam’ when Spectating.
  • Fixed Playlist error when attempting to join from other games.
  • Handle Corrupt Create A Class data instead of kicking player.

Cod 4

You knew it was gonna happen and now it has. Gamepro.com has put the 2 potential game of the year candidates up against each other in 9 different categories. The results might surprise you (although i think they are right on with this).

Whats your pick? Mine is COD4 I’ve been screaming this game for months and now that its out I WAS RIGHT! This game is awesome.
